When to Go

Santa Marta is warm year-round, with a dry season from December to April that coincides with the peak tourist season. This is the easiest time to visit Tayrona National Park and the most reliable for beach weather. The wet season (May to November) brings afternoon showers but fewer crowds and lower prices.

Las Fiestas del Mar -- The Festival of the Sea takes over the city every August, with parades, jet ski shows, the Queen of the Sea beauty pageant, and street parties. It is Santa Marta's biggest celebration.

Festival de la Cumbia -- Held every June to celebrate Colombia's independence, this music and folk dance festival showcases cumbia, the country's signature musical style with roots in African, indigenous, and Spanish traditions.

Fiestas del Caiman -- Running through December and January, these festivals celebrate Colombian folklore. The Feast of the Caiman on January 20 honours La Historia de Tomasita, a popular local legend.
