Santa Marta's shopping is centred on small family-run stalls and workshops rather than chain stores. The downtown area has a good range of handicrafts -- handmade jewellery, leather goods, and local art. Bargaining is expected and part of the experience.
The best concentrated shopping is in El Rodadero, the resort area south of the centre. The alley known as "Callejon de los Jipis" (Hippy Alley) has 47 family shops selling everything from bamboo crafts to emeralds. Look for Vestigos in the centro, which makes t-shirts and crafts inspired by local petroglyphs and indigenous artwork.
