Barrio Las Peñas

Colorful colonial neighborhood at the foot of Santa Ana hill

The oldest neighborhood in Guayaquil sits at the foot of Santa Ana hill, a cluster of brightly painted colonial houses lining a single street — Numa Pompilio Llona, named after the Ecuadorian writer. The barrio has been destroyed and rebuilt several times by fire, most devastatingly in 1896, but today it's been carefully restored and filled with art galleries, small cafes, and craft shops. From the street's end you can climb the 444 steps up Santa Ana hill for sweeping views over the river and city.
