The small town of Cotacachi, 15 km north of Otavalo, is entirely given over to leather. Its main street is lined with workshops and shops selling belts, bags, wallets, jackets, and boots at prices well below what you would pay in a European city. Quality ranges from tourist-grade to genuinely excellent; look for hand-stitching and feel the weight of the leather before buying. Cotacachi makes an easy half-day trip from Otavalo, and combining it with a visit to nearby Laguna Cuicocha fills a full day.
