Every Saturday from around 7am, vendors from across Imbabura province descend on Otavalo and the market expands well beyond the Plaza de los Ponchos, filling adjacent streets and spilling into the animal market a few blocks away. Go early for the best selection and to see locals buying and selling before the tour groups arrive. The textile section sells ponchos, blankets, scarves, table runners, and wall hangings at prices far below what you would pay elsewhere in Ecuador. The best strategy is to walk the whole market before buying anything.
