Getting There

By air: The nearest airport is Reales Tamarindos Airport (PTY) in Portoviejo itself, though the larger and better-connected Eloy Alfaro International Airport (MEC) in Manta — 45 minutes west — has more frequent domestic flights from Quito and Guayaquil. From Manta airport, shared taxis and buses connect to Portoviejo regularly.

By bus: Portoviejo is a major bus hub on Ecuador's Pacific coast. Frequent services connect to Quito (around 8–9 hours), Guayaquil (around 4 hours), Manta (45 minutes), Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas (4 hours) and other coastal towns. The main terminal is centrally located and well-organised. Long-distance buses from Quito and Guayaquil run overnight as well as during the day.

By road: Portoviejo sits on the E30 highway. From Quito, the route via Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas is the most direct (around 5–6 hours by private vehicle).
