Portoviejo's centre is compact and walkable since its post-earthquake reconstruction. The river park, the cathedral, the cultural museum and the market can all be covered in a half-day on foot. The Mamey Ecological Park on the river's opposite bank is a short bus or taxi ride and offers a complete contrast to the urban core.
