Practical Information

Currency. Ecuador uses the US dollar. Credit and debit cards work in cities and tourist areas; carry cash for smaller towns, markets, and rural lodges. ATMs are widespread in Quito, Guayaquil, and Cuenca, but unreliable in smaller towns — stock up before heading to remote areas. The ATM in Montañita, for example, is notoriously empty on weekends.

Visas. Most Western European, North American, and Australasian passport holders can visit Ecuador for up to 90 days without a visa. Bring a return or onward ticket as immigration officers occasionally ask for proof of departure. If entering overland from Colombia or Peru, a criminal record certificate may be required — check current requirements before travel.

Health. No vaccinations are required for entry, but hepatitis A, typhoid, and yellow fever (for Amazon regions) are recommended. Malaria risk exists in lowland Amazon and coastal areas below 1,500m. The altitude in Quito (2,850m) and the highland cities can cause altitude sickness in the first couple of days — take it easy on arrival. Drink bottled or filtered water everywhere.

Safety. Ecuador has seen a marked increase in security incidents since 2022, particularly in Guayaquil, the northern border provinces (Carchi, Sucumbíos, Esmeraldas), and parts of the coast. Quito's historic centre, the Andean highlands, Cuenca, and the Galápagos remain relatively safe for tourists with normal precautions. Avoid displaying expensive gear, use ATMs inside buildings during daylight, and take registered taxis or apps rather than flagging vehicles on the street. In an emergency, dial 911.

Internet and phones. Wi-Fi is good in hotels and cafés in cities. Local SIM cards are cheap and easy to buy; Claro and Movistar have the best coverage. Coverage drops in the Amazon and remote highlands.

Language. Spanish is the official language. English is spoken in tourist-facing businesses, but less so off the beaten track. Kichwa is widely spoken in indigenous highland communities.

Electricity. 110V/60Hz, standard US-style two-pin plugs.

Time zone. UTC−5 on the mainland; Galápagos Islands are UTC−6.
