The Cathédrale Saint-Sauveur is Cayenne's principal church, a modest 19th-century building of stuccoed brick and timber in the colonial Caribbean tradition. The interior is bright and airy, with simple wooden pews and a painted timber ceiling that holds the heat at bay through the equatorial afternoons.
The cathedral has been the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Cayenne since the 19th century, in a region first evangelised by French Jesuits in the 1600s. It sits a short walk from the Place des Palmistes, on the road that runs up toward the Préfecture.
