Currency
French Guiana uses the euro (€), the same as metropolitan France. ATMs are available in Cayenne, Kourou, and Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni. Credit cards are accepted at most hotels and supermarkets in the main towns, but bring cash if you're heading into the interior. Everything is priced at French levels — this is one of the most expensive destinations in South America.
Language
French is the official language. Guianese Creole is widely spoken. In Maroon communities along the Maroni River, Taki-Taki (Sranan Tongo) and other creole languages are common. English is not widely spoken outside tourist-facing businesses.
Electricity
Standard French plugs (Type E, 230V/50Hz). Same as the rest of France.
Phone and Internet
French mobile networks operate here (Orange, SFR). A French or EU SIM works directly. Coverage is good on the coast and in main towns, but disappears quickly in the interior. Internet cafés exist in Cayenne; free Wi-Fi is available in some hotels and cafés.
Safety
Cayenne, Kourou, and Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni are generally safe during the day, though petty theft and bag-snatching do occur in certain neighborhoods after dark. The interior is safe but requires proper preparation — getting lost or injured in the jungle is a serious risk without a guide.
Illegal gold mining (orpaillage clandestin) is a major issue in the interior, particularly along rivers bordering Brazil and Suriname. Miners have been involved in violence in some areas. If trekking remotely, check with local authorities or park rangers first.
Visas
As an overseas department of France and part of the European Union, French Guiana follows French visa rules. Citizens of EU countries, the US, Canada, Australia, and many other countries can enter without a visa for up to 90 days. Note that a Schengen visa for metropolitan France is not automatically valid for French Guiana — check in advance.
A yellow fever vaccination certificate is mandatory for all visitors and must be shown on arrival. This is strictly enforced.
Time Zone
UTC-3, year-round (no daylight saving time).
