Along the coast
The coastal strip between Corriverton in the east and Parika in the west is connected by a reasonable road network and served by minibuses. These run between Georgetown, Linden, and New Amsterdam frequently and cheaply. They depart when full rather than on a fixed schedule. For longer coastal routes, shared taxis are an alternative. Georgetown's road traffic is congested and slow; allow extra time.
To the interior
Getting into Guyana's interior is the main logistical challenge of the trip. Most interior destinations are not accessible by road from Georgetown, or require a very long journey on unpaved tracks.
The practical option for most travellers is to fly. Ogle Aerodrome (also called Eugene F. Correia International Airport, IATA: OGL), about 6km from central Georgetown, is the hub for domestic flights. Trans Guyana Airways and Air Services Limited serve interior airstrips including Kaieteur Falls, Lethem (for the Rupununi), Annai, and various Amerindian villages. Flights are short — typically 45–90 minutes — but baggage limits are strict (around 15kg) and small aircraft are subject to weather delays. Book ahead, especially in the wet season.
For Kaieteur Falls, day tours by small plane depart from Ogle on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The trip costs around US$280 per person and includes a guided walk in the national park. It is the most practical way for most visitors to see the falls.
Boats
Boats are essential for reaching many destinations along the Essequibo River and its tributaries — including Baganara Island and Bartica. Speedboats run from the Stabroek Market stelling in Georgetown to Parika, from where you connect to riverboats heading up the Essequibo. Negotiate fares directly at the wharf.
Taxis
In Georgetown, use licensed taxis arranged through your hotel or by phone. Do not hail taxis from the street. For day trips around the city, agree on a price before you get in.
Car hire
Car hire is available in Georgetown and can make sense for exploring the coast, but the condition of roads outside the main highway is poor. Four-wheel drive is necessary for any interior driving.
