Lake Ypacaraí

Lake Ypacaraí is a shallow freshwater lake of about 60 square kilometres east of Asunción, bordered by Areguá on the west and San Bernardino on the east. The town beach is a strip of dark sand with a few simple kiosks; in good summers swimming is allowed, but algal blooms have closed the water in some recent seasons — check with the kiosks before going in.

Even when swimming is off, the lakefront is a pleasant place to walk in the late afternoon, with the church of Areguá on the hill behind and the open water stretching east. A row of paddle-boat operators sit at the main pier.

A story
The lake is the subject of one of Paraguay's most famous songs, 'Recuerdos de Ypacaraí,' a 1948 guarania (a slow Paraguayan musical form) by Demetrio Ortiz that became an international hit and is still played at every Paraguayan dance. It romanticised the lake into a national symbol.
