The Cabildo — Asuncion's former colonial town hall — has been converted into the Cultural Center of the Republic, a well-maintained museum and exhibition space on the Plaza de la Independencia. The building itself dates from the colonial era, and its ground-floor arcades and internal courtyard have been sensitively restored. Exhibitions cover Paraguayan history, indigenous culture, and contemporary art, with permanent displays alongside rotating shows.
Admission is free, and the building is air-conditioned — a genuine relief on a hot day. The rooftop offers decent views over the plaza and towards the Palacio de los López and the river. It makes a good first stop for anyone wanting context before exploring the rest of the historic centre.
