Filadelfia is the main base for 4WD wildlife trips into the central and northern Chaco, including Defensores del Chaco National Park three to four hours' drive north. Local guides — most of them based out of the cooperative or one of the hotels — run multi-day expeditions to watering holes and salt pans where jaguar, puma, ocelot, giant anteater, Chacoan peccary, lowland tapir, and an extraordinary diversity of birdlife can be found.
The best time is the dry season, roughly May to September, when animals concentrate around the few remaining sources of water. Trips are not cheap and serious wildlife photography requires several days; arrange in advance through the cooperative's tourism office.
