Getting There

Filadelfia is about 480 km northwest of Asunción along the Trans-Chaco Highway (Ruta 9), an arrow-straight strip of asphalt across the Chaco scrub. The drive takes six to seven hours in good conditions, but the road can be cut by floodwater after big storms in the wet season.

Long-distance buses leave Asunción several times a day for Filadelfia and onward to Mariscal Estigarribia near the Bolivian border. Companies like NSA and Stel Turismo run overnight services in fairly comfortable buses.

Filadelfia has a small airfield (SGFI), but commercial flights to it are rare; most visitors come overland. A driver's licence and patience are useful — fuel stations are far apart on the Trans-Chaco, and breakdowns far from help are a real risk.
