The national museum is the necessary companion to the archaeological site. It holds carved stone heads, conch-shell trumpets, the Tello Obelisk, and other pieces that explain how Chavín art used animals, sound, and altered perception.
Visit it after the ruins if you can. The galleries make more sense once you have stood in the plazas and tunnels.
