California Café, on the pedestrian street of José de Sucre, is the best breakfast spot in Huaraz. It has been feeding trekkers for years, and the menu reflects what people actually want before heading into the mountains: proper coffee, fresh fruit, pancakes, eggs done several ways, and wholegrain bread. The service is attentive and the kitchen reliable.
The café also functions as an informal information hub — the walls are covered in trekking maps and notices, and the staff know the current trail conditions better than most agencies. It opens early, which matters if you are catching a 5 am bus to a trailhead. Worth the short walk off Luzuriaga.
