Iron House

Eiffel-designed iron building shipped up the Amazon in 1890

A prefabricated iron building on the corner of the Plaza de Armas, brought to Iquitos from France by a rubber baron around 1890. The building was manufactured by Eiffel's company for the 1889 Paris Exhibition and is now the most recognisable symbol of the rubber boom era that made Iquitos briefly one of the richest cities in South America. The ground floor is occupied by shops; the iron facade is most striking at dusk.

A story
The Iron House on Iquitos's Plaza de Armas was prefabricated in France, displayed at the 1889 Paris Exhibition, and then shipped in pieces across the Atlantic and up the Amazon by a rubber baron at the height of the boom. It was designed by Gustave Eiffel's studio.
