Iquitos is primarily a base for jungle exploration. The city itself has the Iron House on the Plaza de Armas as its main landmark, and the riverfront Malecón Tarapacá offers views over the Amazon. Beyond the city, the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve — the largest protected wetland in Peru — is the main destination, accessible by river over two to three days. Day trips to the nearby village of Belén, built on floating rafts over the river, and to Lake Quistococha (a small zoo and beach 14 km south) are easy from the centre.
