Malecón Tarapacá

Riverside promenade with Amazon views and the city's liveliest evening scene

The Malecón Tarapacá is Iquitos's riverside promenade, running along the west bank of the Amazon for about a kilometre in the centre of the city. In the evenings it fills with locals and travellers, vendors selling grilled meats and tropical juices, and the occasional musician. The views across the river are substantial — the Amazon at this point is wide enough that the far bank is often invisible in haze.

The Malecón is the social centre of the city and the best place to arrange boat trips, meet guides, and get a sense of Amazonian river life. Several of the city's better restaurants and bars are on the streets immediately behind it.
