Pinkuylluna is the mountainside directly across the valley from the Ollantaytambo fortress, studded with Inca storage buildings (qollqas) that are visible as pale rectangular structures from the town below. These storehouses were used to hold food — freeze-dried potatoes, dried meat, maize — for the Inca army and state. Their position high on the mountainside was deliberate: the altitude kept temperatures low and the prevailing winds ensured ventilation, providing natural refrigeration.
A trail leads up to the qollqas from the town, taking about 45 minutes to reach the first cluster. The hike is rewarding: you gain height quickly and the views down to the fortress across the valley grow increasingly dramatic as you climb. Several qollqas have been cleared and stabilised, and you can enter them to see the interior stonework. At the top, a faint trail continues to higher viewpoints, though the terrain becomes rough and you should allow extra time for the altitude.
