Narihualá

The principal archaeological site of the Piura valley, about 15 kilometres south of the city near Catacaos. Narihualá was the capital of the Tallán people, who controlled this stretch of coast before the Inca conquest in the late 1400s.

What survives is a large earthen pyramid built up against a low natural hill, plus the foundations of smaller structures around it. The site is unrestored and modest by Peruvian standards — there is little to compare with Chan Chan or the Moche sites further south — but a small on-site museum gives context, and the view from the top of the pyramid takes in the whole valley.
