The beach town of Huanchaco, 12 km northwest of Trujillo, is the obvious day trip — or a better base than the city itself if you prefer staying near the coast. Beyond Huanchaco, the region's archaeological sites (Chan Chan, the Huacas del Sol y la Luna, Huaca El Brujo) are all reachable as day trips from the city centre.
