Trujillo's great attraction is its archaeology. Within a short drive of the city centre lie two of South America's most important pre-Columbian sites — Chan Chan and the Huacas del Sol y de la Luna — along with a string of smaller Moche and Chimú ruins. The colonial core is handsome too, with one of Peru's best-preserved main squares, but most visitors come for the ancient cities on the desert plain.
