The lighthouse at the very tip of the Punta del Este peninsula has guided ships around the point where the Río de la Plata meets the Atlantic since the late 19th century. It is one of the oldest structures in the resort and sits in a small park at the southern end of the peninsula where you can stand in a few metres and see both coastlines simultaneously — the calm green bay on one side, the blue-grey Atlantic on the other.
The lighthouse itself is not regularly open to the public, but the park around its base is a pleasant spot to watch the fishing boats and yachts manoeuvring around the point. On clear days you can see Gorriti Island directly to the northwest and the Uruguayan coast stretching east toward José Ignacio. Sunset views from this end of the peninsula are excellent.
