Canaima is reached only by air. The standard route is a 50-minute light-aircraft flight from Ciudad Bolívar in a five- or six-seat Cessna, organised by a tour operator as part of a two- or three-day package. Puerto Ordaz (Ciudad Guayana) also has flights but fewer of them, and the operators there are more expensive.
Direct flights from Caracas are occasional and weather-dependent — when they run, they leave from the Charallave airport south of the capital. Most travellers fly first to Ciudad Bolívar by bus or by Conviasa, overnight there, then take the morning flight on. Operators include the Canaima leg, the lodge in the village, all meals, the boat trip up to Angel Falls and the return flight in a single quoted price; this is overwhelmingly the easiest way to organise the visit.
There is no road into Canaima village, no fuel for sale, and no banks. Bring sufficient US dollars in small bills to cover tips and incidental purchases.
