The original church on this site was founded in 1572 — making it among the earliest in continental South America — but, like nearly everything in Cumaná, it has been knocked down and rebuilt by earthquakes more than once. The present church dates mostly from the early 20th century and is a calm, plain interior with a few colonial-era survivals among the religious art.
Worth a short visit for the historical association rather than the architecture. The patron saint, Santa Inés, gives the cathedral its name and is celebrated in the city's main festival each January.
