Flamingo Colonies at Golfete de Coro

The shallow brackish lagoon of the Golfete de Coro, at the base of the peninsula near the isthmus, is home to large colonies of Caribbean flamingos. The birds feed on the brine shrimp and algae in the lagoon's hypersaline shallows, turning the water's edge pink during peak concentrations. Early morning is the best time to visit — the birds are most active then and the light is right for photography.

The same isthmus zone holds mangroves and other shorebirds. Access is easiest from the Coro side; ask locally about boat trips into the lagoon from the fishing villages on the western shore.
