The colonial city of Coro, at the base of the peninsula, is the most rewarding day trip from Paraguaná. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Coro was one of the first European settlements in South America and retains a compact historic center of pastel adobe buildings, cobblestone streets, and Dutch-influenced colonial architecture. The Cathedral Basilica and the Coro Synagogue — the oldest surviving synagogue in the Americas — are the standout monuments. Coro is less than two hours from Punto Fijo by road.
Just outside Coro, the Médanos de Coro sand dunes can be visited on the same day.
