The Médanos de Coro are rolling sand dunes just outside the colonial city of Coro, at the narrow isthmus connecting the Paraguaná Peninsula to the mainland. They are the only true desert dunes in Venezuela — an unlikely sight against the backdrop of Caribbean blue sky. The dunes shift constantly with the trade winds, and early morning visits reward with clean, untracked sand and good light.
The dunes form part of a national park that extends into the lagoon and mangrove zones toward the Golfete de Coro. The main access point is on the highway between Coro and the peninsula. Vendors sell refreshments at the roadside entrance; camel and dune-buggy rides are available for those who want them.
