Beaches

Algiers sits on the Mediterranean coast, and several good beaches are within easy reach of the city. The best options are west of the centre, between Zeralda and Sidi Fredj. In summer they fill up fast with Algerois escaping the heat, so go early.

Zeralda is the most popular beach resort, about 30km west of the centre. It has a holiday village, decent facilities, and conditions for kite surfing and windsurfing.

The Turquoise Coast east of Algiers has rocky bays and sandy coves backed by olive trees and cork oaks. It is quieter than the western beaches, with boat trips, sailing and fishing available.

Sidi Fredj Peninsula, closer to the city, has some of the best swimming beaches in the Algiers area. Beyond the sand there is an old fortress, an open-air theatre and a handful of restaurants. It doubles as a nightlife spot on summer evenings.
