Riadh El Feth

Riadh El Feth is a large cultural and commercial complex built in the 1980s on the ridge below the Martyrs' Memorial. It contains an arts centre, exhibition halls, restaurants, craft shops selling Algerian artisanry, and one of the better bookshops in the city. The complex is architecturally ambitious if not entirely successful — a brutalist plateau at the top of a long escalator that rises from the lower city.

The view from the upper terrace over the city and the bay is excellent and easy to reach: the escalator at Place Audin runs up to Riadh El Feth and is free. The craft shops here sell good quality Algerian textiles, pottery, and leather goods at reasonable prices, making it a more manageable shopping experience than the Casbah souks.
