Souk el-Djemaa

The Friday market of the lower Casbah is the most accessible souk for visitors to Algiers. Vendors spread across the lower alleys selling fabric, clothing, housewares, and a mix of new and second-hand goods. It is not a tourist market — the clientele is local and the goods practical — but it gives a vivid sense of how the Casbah functions as a living, working neighbourhood rather than a museum piece.

The market is most active on Friday mornings; a smaller version runs on other mornings. Arrive before 10am for the best atmosphere. Bargaining is expected for textiles and clothing; fixed-price stalls are clearly indicated.
