Roman Theatre

One of the more substantial Roman remains visible in the town itself. The theatre was carved into the hillside in the Roman fashion and could accommodate a large audience. Much of the seating has been lost or buried beneath later construction, but the curved outline of the cavea is still legible, and some of the stage structure survives.

It sits in the middle of the modern town rather than in any enclosed site, which gives it a pleasingly unguarded quality — you can walk up and examine the stonework without paying an entrance fee or joining a tour. A good companion stop to the museum.
