Igilgili was the ancient settlement on the site of modern Jijel, used by Phoenicians and Carthaginians before becoming part of the Roman world. Little of it presents itself as a tidy archaeological park today, but the name gives the city a depth that the busy modern waterfront does not immediately reveal.
Think of it as context rather than a conventional sight. Walk the centre and harbour with the knowledge that this was not a new colonial town, but a strategic Mediterranean anchorage with a very long history of sailors, soldiers, merchants, and coastal communities.
