Ras El Afia Lighthouse

The Ras El Afia Lighthouse stands west of Jijel on a promontory above the sea, one of the most recognisable landmarks on the road towards El Aouana. The tower itself is simple, but the position is excellent: cliffs, broken rock, and a wide view back towards the city and along the coast.

Come for the setting rather than an interior visit. The lighthouse is a useful stop on a corniche drive, especially late in the day when the light catches the headland and the sea below turns metallic.

A story
Ras El Afia means "cape of fire", a name that fits both the reddish rocks nearby and the lighthouse's purpose. The present tower dates from the early 20th century, when this coast needed a stronger warning light for ships edging along the Kabylie shore.
