Taza National Park

Taza National Park protects a compact but wonderfully varied stretch of the Jijel coast and mountains: cork oak forest, cliffs, caves, hidden beaches, and the wooded Guerrouch massif. It is one of Algeria's smaller national parks, but it packs a lot into a short distance.

The park is best for travellers who like scenery with some rough edges. Trails and facilities are limited, and you should not expect a polished visitor centre experience. The reward is a rare combination of Mediterranean coast and mountain forest, with Barbary macaques, birdlife, and cooler air away from the beach crowds.

A story
Taza is part of UNESCO's biosphere reserve network, partly because its cork oak and oak forests shelter the rare Algerian nuthatch. That tiny bird has made this small coastal park far more important to conservationists than its size would suggest.
