The central market is the best place in Tizi Ouzou for a cheap, unrehearsed meal. Vendors around the perimeter sell grilled merguez sandwiches, harira soup, and msemen (layered flatbread) from early morning through to early afternoon. Inside, the produce stalls are piled with the olive oil, dried figs, and herbs that define Kabyle cooking — excellent for assembling a picnic if you're heading into the mountains.
The market is liveliest on weekday mornings. Come before 10am for the full spread; many vendors pack up by early afternoon. It is also a good place to find locally produced olive oil, which is among the best in Algeria.
