Day Trips

The area around Tizi Ouzou is one of the most rewarding parts of Algeria for day trips. To the north, the Mediterranean coast is within an hour's drive — Tigzirt is a small resort town with Roman ruins and a pleasant beach. To the east, the road to Béjaïa passes through the core of Kabyle country: hilltop villages, cedar forests, and river gorges that reward anyone willing to stop and walk.

The Shrine of Sidi Beloua, about 20km north of the city, sits on a hilltop with sweeping views over the agricultural valleys below — a short and easy excursion. The market town of Larba Naït Irathen, 25km east, has a French fort from the 1850s and a weekly market that draws vendors from across the region.

For longer excursions, the Djurdjura mountains are the obvious draw — either the Tikjda plateau for hiking and mountain air, or the Ait Hichem valley for traditional village architecture. Both are accessible without a guide, though a local driver who knows the roads is helpful for the more remote routes.
