Tizi Ouzou's food scene is built around Kabyle home cooking — hearty mountain food centred on couscous, slow-braised meats, and preserved vegetables. The city has plenty of restaurants and cafés, many clustered around the main boulevard and the university area. Alcohol is largely absent from restaurants (Kabylie is more conservative in this respect than its liberal reputation might suggest), but the food is excellent and the portions generous.
