Getting Around

On foot: The city centre is compact and walkable. The main commercial boulevard, the university area, and the market are all within easy walking distance of each other. Most of what you need in central Tizi Ouzou can be reached on foot.

Taxis: Yellow city taxis are widely available and cheap by European standards. Agree on a price before you depart or insist on the meter. Taxis are the most practical option for getting to neighbourhoods further from the centre or for reaching the bus stations.

Taxis collectifs (shared taxis): These run fixed routes to surrounding villages and towns — the main departure areas are around the central bus station. Shared taxis are how most locals travel between Tizi Ouzou and outlying communities; they fill up quickly and leave when full. Fares are very low.

Buses: There is a local bus network but it can be confusing for first-time visitors. Taxis are generally easier for getting around town.

For the mountains: To explore the Djurdjura and surrounding villages, the most flexible option is a hired vehicle with a driver. Many hotels and guesthouses can arrange this. Alternatively, shared taxis reach most of the larger villages, but services become infrequent from mid-afternoon. Having a driver who speaks Kabyle and knows the roads is valuable in the more remote areas.
