L'Eau Vive

A long-running restaurant in a leafy courtyard in central Ouaga, run by a French Catholic religious community. The menu is colonial-French (terrine, blanquette de veau, tarte aux pommes) executed with care, and the staff — many of them young women in religious dress — sing the Ave Maria at 10pm each night.

It is one of a chain of L'Eau Vive restaurants across West Africa and the experience is the same everywhere, but the Ouaga branch is particularly pleasant and the prices are reasonable (mains 5,000–9,000 CFA). Book ahead at busy times.
