Unlike many Sahelian capitals Ouaga is not predominantly Muslim, and it has the bars and the nightlife to prove it. The drinking scene runs from open-air maquis selling cheap Brakina beer and tô to French-style cafés on Avenue Kwame Nkrumah and one or two more upmarket nightclubs in the central district.
Things get going late — bars stay busy until 2 or 3am — and security advice is to stick to well-lit and well-staffed venues, particularly after the 2016 and 2017 attacks. Stay aware, but don't let it stop you exploring.
