The Grand Mosque stands directly across the square from the Palais du Lamido and is the spiritual centre of the predominantly Muslim Fulani town. The building is plain in the Sahelian tradition — whitewashed walls, a single minaret, and an interior of bare floors and prayer mats — but the Friday gathering is one of the most photogenic in the country, as hundreds of men in long robes spill out into the surrounding streets.
Non-Muslims are not admitted to the prayer hall but can view the building from outside. The square between the mosque and the palace is the heart of the old town; spend some time here observing the comings and goings.
