Ngaoundéré Central Station

Northern terminus of the Trans-Cameroonian railway from Yaoundé

Ngaoundéré Central is the end of the line — the northern terminus of the Trans-Cameroonian railway that runs nearly 900 kilometres from Yaoundé. Trains run roughly nightly in each direction (when conditions allow), and the station itself is the busiest spot in town when one arrives or departs.

The building is a low concrete pavilion with a single platform, faded since the 1970s but functional. Even if you are not taking the train, the station is worth a visit for the spectacle of the arrival — porters with handcarts, traders with sacks of yams, soldiers checking papers, and a brief flood of passengers heading off in shared taxis to Maroua and beyond.

A story
The Yaoundé–Ngaoundéré line, completed in 1974 after years of French and German colonial proposals, finally connected the cattle-rich Adamawa Plateau to the Atlantic port of Douala. The overnight Camrail express still rolls in around dawn, and its arrival is the main event in town — porters, taxis, soldiers and chop-bar women all converge on the platform.
