Shared taxis, known as aluguers, are the main form of public transport on Fogo. They run between São Filipe and the other main towns, including the road up to Chã das Caldeiras. The journey from São Filipe to Chã takes about an hour on a winding mountain road.
To reach the volcano summit, you need to get to Chã das Caldeiras first, where local guides are based. Hiring a private vehicle for a day is straightforward from São Filipe and gives more flexibility, especially if you want to explore the lava fields and crater at your own pace.
