Fogo is one of those islands where the landscape is the attraction. The volcano dominates everything — hiking Pico do Fogo is the reason most visitors come, and it is worth every step of the climb. But the island rewards slower exploration too: the crater village of Chã das Caldeiras, the colonial town of São Filipe, the wine and coffee grown in volcanic soil, and the stark lava fields that record the island's violent recent history.
