São Filipe

São Filipe is Fogo's small capital, perched above the cliffs on the island's west coast where ferries dock at the port below. The town is the most elegant in Cape Verde outside of the major centres: its historic centre is built around handsome colonial sobrados — tall houses with wrought-iron balconies and bright facades that look out over the Atlantic — and cobbled streets that feel genuinely old.

The town is pleasant to walk. The main square, the Pelourinho, has the feel of a place that takes its history seriously. There are restaurants and small hotels, and São Filipe makes a comfortable base for exploring the island, with transport available to Chã das Caldeiras. The market is lively in the mornings and a good place to find local produce, including the island's distinctive coffee and preserved fish.

A story
The sobrados of São Filipe — the tall two- and three-storey colonial houses with wrought-iron balconies and pastel facades — were built during the height of the slave trade, when Fogo was one of the wealthiest islands in the archipelago. The island's prosperity came largely from its role as a transit point for enslaved people from the African mainland, and the houses were built by the landowners who grew rich from that trade. Walking through the old town today, the architecture speaks of money and power, though the history underneath it is considerably darker.
