The Avenida Marginal is Mindelo's seafront boulevard: a wide palm-lined avenue that runs along the bay from the cruise port at one end to Laginha beach at the other, passing the Palacio do Povo, the fish market, and a string of cafes and restaurants on the inland side.
It is the standard spot for the late-afternoon paseo, when half the city walks the length of the promenade before dinner. The view across the bay to Santo Antao at sunset, with the silhouettes of moored sailboats and the occasional cruise ship in the foreground, is one of the city's standard pleasures. Several of the better seafood restaurants have terraces directly on the avenue.
