São Vicente

Dry Cape Verde island dominated by Mindelo, Porto Grande harbour, and views toward Santo Antão.

São Vicente is a small, dry, mountainous island whose entire personality is concentrated in its capital, Mindelo. Outside the city, the landscape is stark — volcanic peaks, barren hillsides, and a handful of small settlements. Monte Verde, at 774 metres, is the highest point and offers views across to Santo Antão on a clear day.

The bay of Mindelo, Porto Grande, is one of the finest natural harbours in the Atlantic and was historically a major coaling station for ships crossing between Europe, Africa, and South America. That maritime heritage gave Mindelo its cosmopolitan character — British, Portuguese, and African influences all layered in this compact port town.

Baia das Gatas, a natural rock pool beach on the eastern coast, is good for swimming and hosts an outdoor music festival every August that draws visitors from across the archipelago. The beach at Praia de Laginha is within walking distance of central Mindelo.

Most travellers use São Vicente as a base for exploring Mindelo and as a jumping-off point for the ferry to Santo Antão.

Guide

Getting There

São Vicente is served by Cesária Évora Airport (VXE), named after the island's most famous daughter. International flights connect to Lisbon (TAP, several times a week) and Amsterdam (TUI), and there are connections to other Cape Verde islands. Inter-island flights on TACV Cabo Verde Airlines or Binter Canarias connect São Vicente to Santiago (Praia), Sal, and other islands.

By sea, inter-island ferries connect Mindelo to other islands. The most important is the crossing to Santo Antão — the ferry from Porto Grande in Mindelo to Porto Novo takes around 50 minutes and runs several times daily. There is also a weekly passenger/cargo ferry service that loops through the other islands.

Within Mindelo, taxis are plentiful and cheap. Aluguers (shared minibuses) run between Mindelo and the main beaches and villages around the island at low cost.

Things to Do

São Vicente's pleasures are simple and largely outdoor. The city of Mindelo provides the music, the restaurants, and the culture; the island provides beaches, mountains, and dramatic volcanic scenery. Monte Verde to the east and the beaches on the northern and eastern coasts are the main draws outside the city. The ferry from Mindelo's Porto Grande to Santo Antão is one of the great short sea crossings in the Atlantic and can be taken as an easy day excursion.

When to Go

São Vicente has a dry, subtropical climate year-round. Temperatures hover between 22°C and 30°C throughout the year, with the coolest months being December through March when the Saharan harmattan can blow dust across the sky. The trade winds make even the hottest months bearable.

The Baia das Gatas Music Festival in August is the single biggest event in the island's calendar and draws visitors from across Cape Verde and the diaspora — book accommodation well in advance if you plan to attend. Mindelo's Carnival in February is widely considered the best in Africa and a close second as a reason to time your visit. Outside these events, the island is quiet year-round.
